چکیده

Ideally the character of an evolutionary search algorithm should be predicated on the shape of the underlying search landscape. Unfortunately, a number of operators used in evolutionary computation are very sensitive to rotation of the encoding space. The potential bias of the orientation of the encoding for these operators indicates that both the alignment of the encoding as well as the search problem influence the performance of search algorithms using these operators. This paper explores two potential mechanisms for removing rotational bias in a recombinative operator (2-point crossover) as well as a mutative operator as applied to realencoded function optimization.

Rotationally Invariant Crossover Operators in Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization

Multi-objective problems with parameter interactions can present difficulties to many optimization algorithms. We have investigated the behaviour of Simplex Crossover (SPX), Unimodal Normally Distributed Crossover (UNDX), Parent-centric Crossover (PCX), and Differential Evolution (DE), as possible alternatives to the Simulated Binary Crossover (SBX) operator within the NSGA-II (Non-dominated So...

An Adaptive Hybrid Morphological Method for Designing Translation Invariant Morphological Operators

— In this paper an adaptive hybrid morphological method is presented for designing translation invariant morphological operators via Matheron Decomposition and via Banon and Barrera Decomposition. It consists of a hybrid model composed of a Modular Morphological Neural Network (MMNN) and an evolutionary search mechanism: the adaptive Genetic Algorithm (GA) (adaptive rates in genetic operators)....

Representation Invariant Genetic Operators

A genetic algorithm is invariant with respect to a set of representations if it runs the same no matter which of the representations is used. We formalize this concept mathematically, showing that the representations generate a group that acts upon the search space. Invariant genetic operators are those that commute with this group action. We then consider the problem of characterizing crossove...

Rotationally Invariant Image Representation for Viewing Direction Classification in Cryo-EM

We introduce a new rotationally invariant viewing angle classification method for identifying, among a large number of cryo-EM projection images, similar views without prior knowledge of the molecule. Our rotationally invariant features are based on the bispectrum. Each image is denoised and compressed using steerable principal component analysis (PCA) such that rotating an image is equivalent ...

Invariant Crossover in Evolutionary 5 Multi - Objective Optimization

Problems that are not aligned with the coordinate system can present difficulties to many 15 optimization algorithms, including evolutionary algorithms, by trapping the search on a ridge. The ridge problem in single-objective optimization is understood, but until now 17 little work has been done on understanding this issue in themulti-objective domain.Multiobjective problemswithparameter intera...
